Mega Millions pot may hit $1 billion

No winners Tuesday; Friday’s drawing now estimated at $868 million and could go up

If you thought lines were long at Century Lotto stores Tuesday prior to that night's Mega Millions drawing, you haven't seen anything yet.

Nobody won the top prize Tuesday night and Lottery officials are estimating the top prize for Friday night's drawing will be at least $868 million and could possibly reach $1 billion with the frenzy to purchase tickets.

Mega Millions is a game that involves 44 states and two jurisdictions. To play, you pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega Ball from 1 to 25. Each ticket costs $2 but a Megaplier can be added for an additional $1 that will multiply the winnings of non jackpot winners by up to five times.

Tuesday night the winning numbers were 3, 45, 49, 61, 69 and 9 was the Mega Ball. The Megaplier was 5.

Nobody matched all five numbers and the Mega Ball, which now rolls the jackpot close to the $1 billion mark. Tuesday, one person correctly picked the five numbers but missed the Mega Ball and collected $1 million. Had that person spent a dollar more for the Megaplier, the winnings would have been $5 million.

The next Mega Millions drawing will be held at 11 p.m. Friday.
