Some missed opportunities early and late opened the door for Bayside Academy to take a 34-21 victory over Flomaton Friday night handing the Hurricanes their first loss of the season as well as the first area loss.

Flomaton will be back in area play this Friday night when the Hurricanes travel to Mobile Christian.

"We didn't practice well all week and we didn't play well Friday night," said Flomaton head coach Doug Vickery. "We never seemed able to get in tune."

"We still did some good things, but we couldn't make the plays when we needed too," Vickery added. "We got inside the 20 four times and didn't score. It's like leaving runners on base in baseball, you've got to take advantage of those opportunities."

Bayside opened the game with an onsides kick that was recovered by Flomaton's Alex Cash to give the Hurricanes a first down at the Bayside 49-yard line. Flomaton was able to march to the 12-yard line before a fourth down pass fell incomplete.

Bayside went three and out and was forced to punt and Flomaton followed suit with a three and out and a punt giving Bayside the ball at its own 44-yard line with 6:35 left in the first quarter.

Bayside coughed up the football and Flomaton's Javontaye Wright recovered to give the Hurricanes a first down the Flomaton 47-yard line.

Daquan Johnson hit Quincie McCall for a first down at the Bayside 43, but the drive stalled and the Canes were forced to punt again.

Bayside took over at its own 28 and moved to the 44 before Johnson intercepted a pass and Flomaton took over at its own 46.

Flomaton was forced to punt but Bayside fumbled the punt and Flomaton's Braydon Johnson recovered to give the Hurricanes a first down at the Bayside 35-yard line.

Devonta Bradley picked up 8 yards on the final play of the first quarter.

Johnson converted a second and 2 at the 27 into a first down at the 20. A bad center-to-quarterback exchanged cost the Hurricanes 11 yards, putting Flomaton in a second and 21 situation at the 31.

Johnson hit DaShun Odom at the 13, but the Canes were unable to score and turned the ball over on downs at the Bayside 13.

Bayside was again forced to punt and Flomaton had the ball at its own 41, but an illegal block moved the ball back to the 31.

Johnson fumbled on a scramble and Bayside recovered at the Flomaton 43-yard line. Bayside then marched toward the goal line and scored on a 4-yard run. The PAT was good and with 2:03 left in the half, Bayside led 7-0.

Flomaton moved into Bayside territory on its next possession and Johnson hit McCall on a 41-yard scoring pass. The PAT was no good and with 53 seconds left in the first half Flomaton trailed 7-6.

After beginning its next drive at its won 36, Bayside quickly moved into Flomaton territory and found the end zone with less than a second remaining on the clock. The PAT was good and Bayside took a 14-6 lead into the lockerroom at the half.

Bayside struck first in the second half on a 4-yard touchdown run. The PAT was good and with 7:32 left in the third quarter, Bayside led 21-6.

Flomaton began its drive at its own 26 and Johnson hit Odom on a big pass play to the Bayside 41. Jate'vius Franklin then hauled in a pass at the 18-yard line.

Johnson then hit McCall on an 18-yard scoring strike. Odom carried the two-point try into the end zone and with 5:54 left in the third, Flomaton trailed 21-14.

Flomaton was able to move to the Bayside 19-yard line late in the third quarter as the quarter came to an end with Bayside leading 21-14.

But the scoring threat was dashed on an interception that eventually set up a 13-yard touchdown run for Bayside. The PAT failed, but Bayside had stretched its lead to 27-14 with 11:00 left in the game.

Bayside would make it 34-14 with 4:09 left in the game on a 3-yard run.

Flomaton added the final points with 1:27 left in the game on a 1-yard run by Johnson. Odom added the PAT to make the final score 34-21.

On the night, Flomaton rushed 28 times for 120 yards and hit on 11 of 26 passes for 234 yards for a total offensive effort of 354 yards.

Bayside rushed 40 times for 233 yards and hit on four of seven passes for 71 yards for a total offensive effort of 304.
