Chiefs take victory in Royal matchup

The Northview Chiefs walked away with a 30-20 victory in their homecoming game against Jay on Friday night.

The Chiefs drew first blood on the gridiron with a 66-yard touchdown run from Jayden Jackson on the third play of the game with 10:40 left in the first quarter. The PAT was no good and put the Chiefs up 6-0.

The rest of the first quarter was a slug fest and no points were added to the scoreboard as both teams struggled to get the upper hand.

Jay was able to rally with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Jay quarterback Judd Smith, who found Connor Roberts in the end zone. The PAT was no good and the Royals tied the game 6-6 with 8:30 left in the second.

The Chiefs got the ball and Northview quarterback Ben Wilson hit Ray'von Bush with a 25-yard touchdown pass with 5:55 left to play in the first half. The Chiefs failed to capitalize on the PAT and took the lead 12-6 against Jay.

With 1:50 left to play in the second quarter, Northview's Wilson found a hole and hit Seth Killam in the end zone for a 76-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good, but the Chiefs had extended their lead 18-6.

Not to be deterred, Jay answered with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Austin Ashworth. No points were added by the failed PAT, but the Royals had cut Northview's lead 18-12 going into half time.

Norhview came out during the third quarter and added to their lead with an 14-yard touchdown run by

Jackson. With no points on the PAT, the score was 24-12 with 5:31 left in the third quarter.

The Chiefs once again put up points in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run by Aunterio Minor. The PAT was no good making the score 30-12 with 3:02 left in the game.

Jay's Soloman Ransom scored on a 29-yard touchdown run and Stone Brown caught the 2-point conversion bringing the score 30-20 with 1:49 left in the game.

Jay head coach Melvin Kersey commented on the loss against Northview.

"We didn't tackle very well," said Kersey. "We also busted a few coverages on defense, but we only trailed 12-10 at the half."

Jay will be open this Friday night before traveling to North Bay Haven on Oct. 19.With schools shutting down at noon Wednesday and all day Thursday due to Hurricane Michael, the Royals weren't able to practice, but Kersey said the off week came at good time.

Northview goes back on the road this week to face-off against Pensacola Catholic in a regular season game. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
