Rocky Bayou royally shutout by Jay

After dropping its season opener Aug. 24 to Flomaton 27-0, the Jay Royals have outscored their next two opponents 92-0 following Friday night's 52-0 win at Rocky Bayou Christian.

Jay head coach Melvin Kersey said focus now turns to a road game this Friday night at Wewahitchka.

“We've played good the last two weeks, but this is a new week and another long road trip,” Kersey said. “Wewaw runs the triple option and they have a lot of confidence in their fullback. They have a good offensive line, so it will be a battle up front.”

He said Wewahitchka's quarterback does a good job running the option and said they are patiently waiting for the other team to make a mistake.

“They will try to be more physical up front,” Kersey said. “We know we have our work cut out for us.”

This past Friday night, Jay was the more physical team pounding Rocky Bayou.

“We played well,” Kersey said. “'The defense played well and we got a few turnovers. The offense moved the ball and we only threw it twice.”

Jay's defense showed its strength holding Rocky Bayou to negative 41 yards rushing and gave up 20 yards passing to give Rocky a total offensive effort of negative 21 yards. Jay picked up 288 yards rushing and 75 through the air for a total offensive effort of 363 yards.

James Eddings had 105 yards on nine carries, Solomon Ransom had 79 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns, Trevor Flowers had 15 yards on two carries and Stone Brown had 11 yards on two carries and a touchdown.

Jay started the scoring with 10:50 left in the first quarter when Judd Smith hit Austin Ashworth on a 6-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was no good and Jay led 6-0.

With 6:06 left in the first Eddings scored on a 3-yard run. Bryson McCullough kicked the PAT and Jay had increased its lead to 13-0.

McCullough then returned a Rocky Bayou fumble 1 yard for a touchdown. He followed with a successful PAT and with 5:08 left in the first Jay led 20-0.

Brown wrapped up the first-quarter scoring on 1-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed, but Jay led 26-0 at the end of the first.

Jay began the second quarter like it closed the first when Connor Roberts returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was no good, but with 11:46 left in the first half, Jay had stretched its lead to 32-0.

Smith hit Ashworth on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 9:37 left in the half and McCullough added the PAT to give Jay a 39-0 lead.

Ransom wrapped up the first half scoring on a 31-yard touchdown run with 6:31 left. The PAT was no good, but Jay took a 45-0 lead into the lockerroom.

After a scoreless third quarter, Ransom scored on a 10-yard run with 6:07 left in the game. McCullough's PAT made the final score 52-0.
