Lions Pancake supper set for Monday

The Flomaton Lions Club will host a Pancake Supper at 5:30 p.m., next Monday, August 27, at the Flomaton Community Center, located on McCurdy Street in Flomaton.

Tickets for a plate are $5 each and will have pancakes, syrup, butter, sausage, with a choice of orange juice, milk or water. All proceeds will benefit the Flomaton High School LEO scholarship fund. Tickets are sold at the door or can be purchased from a Flomaton Lion. There will not be live music at this pancake supper because it is too loud.

The Flomaton Lions hold two pancake suppers annually, enlisting the help of the LEOs and their sponsor, Lion Jaye Jaye Hagan. LEOs are encouraged to volunteer for community service and the first pancake supper this year will give the students that chance.

“The Leos always enjoy helping the Lions and enjoy serving at the pancake supper,” said Hagan. “Its a chance for them to not only serve with the Lions, but to serve the community and get to meet people in their community. The are able to connect with people in their community.”

Hagan said the LEOS already have two projects under their belt in the first two weeks of school, giving campus tours and participating a Campus Clean-up.

“The LEOs had campus tours, showing new students where to go and how to find their way around the school,” said Hagan. “For the Campus Clean-up last Saturday, they pressure washed the bathroom facilities in the new concession stands, bleachers and press box.”

The Lions are also planning to honor local and area veterans on Saturday, Nov. 10, by hosting a Veterans Day event, including live patriotic music, food, the Boy Scouts, a local high school ROTC presentation and other festivities.

“Our veterans are honored locally, in Atmore, Brewton, Jay and some other nearby towns,” said Lion Wayne Key. “It's time for Flomaton to join in celebrating and honoring the sacrifices these brave men and women made so that can live free. We want to make it a yearly event and invite the veterans and their families to be a part of it.”

The Flomaton Lions will be at Railroad Junction Day in September and plan on having a float in this year's Christmas parade, as well as a yearly sock hop.

“We really want to let the community know who we are and what we do,” said Lion president Gretchen McPherson. “Some people are still not aware that Flomaton even has a Lions Club. We want to change that. We need those who want to serve, which is what we do. All are welcome for that purpose.”

The Flomaton Lions meet at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Flomaton Community Center on McCurdy Street. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend
