Wreck on I-65 claims Satsuma soldier

A Satsuma man serving in the Alabama National Guard lost his life and another man was injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 Thursday morning.

John Wesley Waldrop, 38, was killed when the 2009 military Humvee he was operating left the roadway and overturned at the 63.7 mile marker, six miles north of Atmore, according to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency press release. Waldrop was pronounced dead on the scene.

The report said passenger Justin Cecil McCullough, 25, of Grand Bay, was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital in Brewton.

Both men were members of the 1156th Military Police in Fairhope, where Waldrop was a squad leader. Waldrop was on a mission preparing for his unit's annual training when the Humvee he was operating crashed.

“I am truly saddened at this loss,” said Maj. Gen. Sheryl E. Gordon, Alabama National Guard adjutant general. “I've lost soldiers before, and it never gets easier. I am praying for the family and we are reaching out to them to help them in any way we can.”

Both the Alabama State Troopers and the Alabama National Guard continue to investigate. No further information was available, as of press time.
