Keep eyes out for neighbors

The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff's Office recently solved several burglaries due to 'nosey' neighbors seeing suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

Ask any law enforcement agency and they will tell you most crimes are solved by people coming forward with information. They solve most crimes by people in the community reporting suspicious activity.

We've got a lot of great law enforcement officers in this county, as well as Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in Florida. But they can't be everywhere, all the time.

The recent burglaries solved came from neighbors dialing 911 to report someone attempting to break into a house. Without that information these burglars would still be out on the streets breaking into houses, sheds and taking things that don't belong to them.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said the community provides the eyes and ears to help not only solve crimes, but prevent crimes from happening.

Flomaton Police Chief Bryan Davis has echoed those statements.

Sometimes people don't want to be 'nosey' and don't want to get involved. But any law enforcement officer will tell you that if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, pick up the phone and call the cops.

This time of year, burglaries and scams tend to increase. Watching out for your neighbors is a good way to curb crime.

Law enforcement officers would rather respond to 10 calls and find nothing wrong than not be contacted by one that ended with a crime or possible injury.

They'll pull over suspicious vehicles circling your neighborhood; if there's no harm, no foul they will be one their way.

It takes a community to build a neighborhood and it takes a community to protect it.

Don't hesitate to call the police.
