Pettis faces child sex charges

Brewton man accused of performing sex acts on child under 12; meth found at arrest

A Brewton man is being held on $250,000 after being arrested on multiple sex charges against a child under the age of 12.

George Newton Pettis, 57, 422 Janice Lane, was arrested last Thursday and charged with sex abuse of a child under 12, enticing a child for immoral purposes and sodomy I. When sheriff's deputies arrested Pettis at his home last week on the sex charges Pettis was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said the sheriff's office received a complaint on Sept. 26, 2017, in reference to Pettis having inappropriate contact and sexual abuse of minor children.

Lambert said the sheriff's office, along with the Department of Human Resources and the Child Advocacy Center began an investigation that led to the three felony warrants for his arrest.

Lambert noted the meth and a clear pipe that tested positive for meth were discovered on Pettis at the time of his arrest.

According to arrest warrants the abuse of the child is believed to have occurred from 2012 through 2017.

The warrants accuse Pettis of fondling and performing oral sex on the victim while she played games on his cell phone. He is also accused of engaging in deviate sexual intercourse with the child.

Under the bond agreement, if Pettis is freed on the $250,000 he is ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim or any child under the age of 16.
