  • AEDs don't care about state lines

    Our View|Apr 19, 2018

Hats off to Century Mayor Henry Hawkins and members of the town council for voting Monday night to spend $1,103 to purchase an Automated Defibrillator for the Flomaton Fire Department. Our bet is Hawkins and some members of the council are catching grief over the fact that they bought something for Flomaton. It's some of the same flack the Century Council caught about 13 years ago when they purchased an AED for the Flomaton Fire Department. The state line does not have a wall. From our view, Flomaton and Century are one community working...

  • We must balance the budget

    Congressman Bradley Byrne, Guest Columnist|Apr 19, 2018

When the 115th Congress kicked off last January, I immediately introduced a bill that I believe is fundamental to the future of our country: a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The premise of a Balanced Budget Amendment is pretty straightforward. The federal government should not be allowed to spend more than we take in, except in extraordinary circumstances like a time of war. This isn’t some sort of far flung idea. When I served in the Alabama State Legislature, we were required to pass a balanced budget each year. It was no...

  • Power comes from the purse strings

    Steve Flowers, Guest Columnist|Apr 19, 2018

Our antiquated 1901 Constitution was designed to give inordinate power to the Legislature. During the Wallace years, the King of Alabama politics, George Wallace, usurped this power and controlled the Legislature from the Executive Branch of Government. Over the last couple of decades the Legislature has wrestled this power back and pretty much excluded the Governor from their bailiwick. Governors Bob Riley and Robert Bentley were ostracized and pretty much ignored. Their proposed budgets were instantaneously tossed into the nearest trashcan....

  • Trying to take away citizenship

    Pete Riehm, Guest Columnist|Apr 19, 2018

Illegal immigration has been a hot button issue for decades with most Americans wanting the problem solved, but most politicians seem unable or unwilling to tackle this mounting perennial problem. Despite relentless efforts to diffuse illegal immigration and make it more palatable by banishing terms like “illegal alien” or euphemizing them with innocuous names like “undocumented worker,” Americans still view illegal immigration as a critical concern. Losing the public relations battle over “illegal immigration,” Democrats are now trying a ne...

  • Clyde's was a Jay fixture

    Kevin McKinley, Guest Columnist|Apr 19, 2018

A blue tinged cloud of cigarette smoke hanging in the air; as a juke box cranks out a Lefty Frizzel tune against the faint glow of a dimly lit dance floor. Cars parked out front proudly displaying their tail fins as their long, shiny frame casts silhouettes against a moonlit night. If you found yourself at a place like this; it might be the 1950s in our area and a weekend night. Farmers, Chemstrand workers, servicemen and others would be making the rounds from the South Flomaton bars, to the...

All are invited to the dedication ceremony starting at 2:00 pm at the corner of Front Street and Jefferson Avenue and to the reception following in the Leach House Museum (near the corner of Fourth Street and Jefferson Avenue). • We wanted, built and owned a billy

    Earline Smith Crews, Guest Columnist|Apr 19, 2018

We were a creative bunch. We were blessed with excess energy and low on spending money for toys. We were creative. My older brothes, Rayford and Jarvis ( aka Humpy ) built things for making our fun more fun. Our land had several natural ponds, one being, "the pond". Daddy had given instuctions on building a billy. What is a billy you ask. A " billy" is a contraption that looks like a ladder and will float on water. We needed a billy. We would enjoy floats into "the pond" while riding the billy. My older brothers did the hard work on...

The event is part of the class’s fundraising project. Each year the class will organize events and fundraisers as part of an effort to raise money to put back into the community. Last year’s class raised money to purchase a bench that was placed in Heritage Park and donated money to the Atmore Community Fun...
