School board approves renovations at Flomaton

The Escambia County (Ala.) Board of Education called a special meeting Monday, Feb. 5, to approve awarding the contract from Triptek Construction to renovate the Flomaton High School home side concession stand and Creamer Dozier to do the demolition work.

The total of the bid is $707,800 with $458,000 as the base bid with one alternate bid of $249,800.

The $249,800 alternate bid includes the visitor's side concession stand, walkways complete with a concrete pad and drainage. Creamer will do the demolition work of the existing concession stands and restrooms on home and visitor sides for $12,000. Superintendent John Knott said that the bids came in at less than the board expected.

“In our capital improvement plan, we have enough allocated to cover the base bid,” said Superintendent John Knott. “If we had the work done at the same time, it will be cheaper. As costs increase down the road, we can consider allocating enough money to do the visitor's side.”

Knott and CFO Julie Madden discussed the need to reroof Escambia County Middle School and W.S. Neal Middle School. Knott said he had spoken with the maintenance at both schools and was told there are no active leaks so the project can be extended another year without problems.

Several board members expressed concern about the standing water in the parking lot of Flomaton High School. Knott got the schematics out to show the path where drainage tunnels will run under the concrete and carry the water away from the concession stand and corner of the field where it tends to collect now when it rains.

“We will move the concessions building down and back, which will help with the traffic flow,” said Knott. “We will also put a drain outlet in the asphalt to help redirect water standing in the parking lot between the stadium and bandroom. The low areas will drain in the parking lot.”

Knott said that Creamer Dozier will begin demolition in the spring and he is hoping the entire project will be finished in time for the first football game of the 2018-2019 season.

The ticket sales and concessions will be inside, out of the cold wind, which will be nice for those who work at the games in the winter. Knott said they will use prefinished, prefabricated blocks like the ones at W.S. Neal, because they require no painting and very little upkeep. The roof will be dark green metal.

In a motion made by Cindy Jackson and seconded by David Nolin, the board approved and the motion carried.
