Jay council approves FDOT plan

The Jay town council voted Monday night to approve the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) plans to install curbs and sidewalks at the intersection of Calfee Street and Highway 4.

The improvements are part of the FDOT's project to standardize sidewalks throughout the state, according to contractor Eric Seib. The new sidewalks will be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant, with bright yellow surfaces called 'detectable warning' which help visually impaired pedestrians, and include the removal of old concrete and the installation of new concrete and gutters.

In a motion made by Jay Mayor Shon Owens and seconded by Councilwoman Jane Hayes, the council voted unanimously and the motion carried.

Livestock Market

According to Seib, the grant for the Jay Livestock Market has been awarded, but the project has not been cleared for bidding. The engineers and town officials are working on plans that each party will agree on. Mayor Owens has said in the past that he would like to see any old weathered wood that can remain intact or be reused be salvaged, but was told it would cost more than the cost to demolish.

Seib said that the engineer questioned the structural integrity of one of the trusses in the building. Councilwoman Hayes and Owens said they would like to see if the truss was able to be repaired and Owens requested a meeting with a truss company there at the property to determine if it is viable or not. Seib told Owens he would contact a company and arrange the meeting.
