Town seeks applicants for chief of police
Flomaton Police Chief Dane NeSmith resigned from his position and the town has begun advertising to hire a new chief.
NeSmith joined the Flomaton Police Department in 2019 and was named police chief last year. NeSmith said he’s not sure what the next chapter in his life will be but said he wants to remain in law enforcement.
“I feel like I’ve gotten to a point in Flomaton that it’s time to go somewhere and start a new chapter,” NeSmith said. “I miss police work and I’ve been sitting behind a desk too long.”
“I’ve really enjoyed it here and the people in the community have been very supportive,” NeSmith added.
NeSmith submitted his letter of resignation to Mayor Jim Johnson on April 12, stating his last day would be May 30.
“I want to thank you for the time I have spent employed by the town of Flomaton,” NeSmith wrote. “I have enjoyed the many years I have spent working for the town and the citizens. I would like to thank the town for the many opportunities it has presented me.”
Mayor Johnson thanked NeSmith for his service over the past five years and wished him the best.
“I want to thank Dane for his work these past five years and wish him the best as he moves forward,” Johnson said.
Johnson said no interim chief has been named but stated Captain John Skipper will lead the department until a new chief is hired.
The deadline to apply of the chief of police position is 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 14. Applications may be picked up and turned in with a resume at the town clerk’s office inside town hall at 2125 Ringold St., Flomaton. Applications and resumes may also be submitted to the Alabama Career Center.
