Reardon steps down from Flomaton council

Council will now appoint someone to fill the remaining two years on his council term

Flomaton Councilman Charlie Reardon submitted his resignation from that position last week, effective immediately, and the town council will now appoint someone to fill the remainder of his District 1 seat, which runs through 2025.

Reardon, 81, said he has some issues he needs to take care of first and said he has enjoyed his time on the council and wishes nothing but the best for Flomaton.

Born in Pensacola, Reardon has had connections to Flomaton since 1942 and moved to Flomaton in 1985.

He worked in construction as a project supervisor for about 40 years and has rental property in Flomaton, noting all his children graduated from Flomaton High School.

In the 1990s he joined the Escambia County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Tim Hawsey and spent 16 years as a deputy sheriff before retiring.

Reardon said he had considered running for council but didn't want to run against Butch Lee, who he said he considered a friend and fellow law enforcement officer.

When Lee resigned his position, the council appointed Reardon in 2014 to finish Lee's term and Reardon was elected to his seat twice with no opposition.

"I love this community," Reardon said. "My family was raised here and I just enjoy living here."

"I tried to do my best on the council, not only for the people in my district but for the entire town," Reardon added. "I enjoyed working with the people and I have a lot of good friends in my district. I wish them the best."

Mayor Jim Johnson said he wished Reardon nothing but the best and praised him for the job he has done.

"He's been an asset to Flomaton and the entire county," Johnson said. "He truly cares about Flomaton and all the citizens."

Johnson said Wednesday no timetable has been set to select someone to fill the remaining two years of Reardon's term.
