Century man found shot dead

Former FHS student found dead with multiple gunshot wounds early Sunday

A twenty-year-old Century man whose body was found early Sunday with multiple gunshot wounds on a sidewalk along N. Century Boulevard has been identified by family members as Jaheem Durant.

According to Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Morgan Lewis, around 2 a.m., Sunday, the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office responded in Century and located a deceased male with multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies located several shell casings nearby in the area. "At this time, we do not have any suspects," said Lewis. "This is an ongoing homicide investigation." A witness stated he was standing in the parking lot of the Food Giant in Century around 11 p.m. Saturday night when he and another witness heard what sounded like 8 gunshots fired close by, coming from the south.

Durant played football at Northview and then Flomaton High School, where he graduated from. He was the father of a 2-year-old child. Flomaton High School head football coach Doug Vickery said he was saddened by the news of Durant's death, remembering him not only as a good football player but a great person. Durant transferred from Northview to Flomaton and played on the Hurricane's 2020 football team.

"He was a great kid and had an infectious personality," Vickery said. "He was like a comedian and always kept me laughing. Everybody liked him and he was a great guy on the field and off the field," Vickery added. "He was a tremendous football player but more important he was a tremendous person and we're going to miss him."
