Cities will pay for housing prisoners

$35 per day for those jailed at county jail

Municipalities within Escambia County (Ala.) will soon have to pay the county $35 per day for housing inmates arrested on misdemeanor charges or violating local ordinances under an agreement passed Monday by the county commission.

The commission approved a tri-party intergovernmental service agreement for housing city prisoners. The contract presented Monday was for the city of Brewton, but Sheriff Heath Jackson said an identical contract will be presented to Atmore, East Brewton and Flomaton.

Jackson said the charge will levied only for people brought to jail on charges that will be handled in the municipalities’ city court or district court. There will be no charge for inmates jailed on felonies or other state offenses.

Budget approved

In other business Monday, the commission approved its 2023-2024 budget that gives a 50-cent per hour raise for county employees and a $1 per hour raise for jailers and deputies.

In other business, the commission:

- Approved a prosed plat for Wicker Pines Subdivision.

- Approved a letter of support for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Nationally Significant Federal Lands and Tribal Projects Grant application for the resurfacing to Jack Springs Road.

- Approved a lease agreement with Charitable Aid Association to house the Area 1 highway maintenance facility in the Damascus area.

- Approved a Diversified Computer Services Agreement for highway software.

- Approved annual bids for uniforms to Gulf States Distribution for Class B uniforms and will rebid Class A uniforms; annual drug testing to DTPM; fuel to Murphy Oil Company; road signs to Vulcan Signs; paving, striping and asphalt plant mix to Mobile Asphalt (in place) and HO Weaver & Sons for concrete material; and asphalt plant mix spot leveling from Asphalt Plus LLC.
