County considers abandoning road

Commission wants feedback from citizens

Property owners on both sides of Cottage Road in the Keego community have asked the Escambia County (Ala.) County Commission to vacate the road and take it out of the county road system.

Commissioner Larry White said he had no objections as long as the public has no problems.

County Engineer Parker Ross told the commission Monday that the property owners on both sides had requested the road be vacated.

The commission will hold a public hearing at a later date before deciding on whether or not to vacate the road.

Albritton named

The commission also voted Monday to appoint State Sen. Greg Albritton to represent Escambia County on Southwest Alabama Behavioral Health Care Systems’ board.

The Behavioral Health Care Systems is a private entity and subcontractors for the state of Alabama dealing with mental health issues. Sen. Albritton served as a member of Conecuh County and has now moved to Escambia County.

County Clerk-Administrator Ron Cink said he received a letter from the board requesting Sen. Albritton be named as the county’s representative.

Holiday schedules

The commission voted Monday to approve the 2023-2024 fiscal year holiday schedule for the county and the road department. Other than around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the two schedules are the same.

The road department’s holiday schedule around Thanksgiving gives holidays for Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 22 and 23. The holiday for the county offices is Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23 and 24.

At Christmas the road department will be off Thursday, Dec. 21 and Monday, Dec. 25. County offices will be closed Friday, Dec. 22 and Monday, Dec. 25.

Several years ago, the county adopted the state’s holiday schedule to avoid conflicts where state offices and county offices would be closed on different days. With the adoption by the county the courthouse will either be open or closed and not with state offices open and county offices closed. The schedule passed Monday mirrors the state schedule with the exception of Juneteenth Independence Day on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Juneteenth is not on the state holiday schedule, but was approved as a county holiday.

The rest of the holiday schedule includes:

Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 9, 2023; Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023; New Years, Monday, Jan. 1, 2024; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s., birthday, Monday, Jan. 15, 2024; George Washington and Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, Monday, Feb. 19, 2024; Confederate Memorial Day, Monday, April 22, 2024; Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024; Jefferson Davis’ birthday, Monday, June 3, 2024; Independence Day, Thursday, July 4, 2024; and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, 2024.
