Argument over dog leads to man killed

Atmore man being held without bond on charges of shooting and killing another Atmore man

An argument concerning a dog led to one Atmore man being killed and another being jailed on murder charges.

Wendell Farrell White, 65, 7400 Jack Springs Road, lot 4A, remains in jail without bond for the shooting death of Deangelo Bailey, 33, also of Atmore.

About 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 26, Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies, Poarch Tribal Police officers and Atmore Police Department officers were dispatched to White's residence and lot 3B at the mobile home park in reference to shots fired.

According to information released by the sheriff's office, a male subject, later identified as Bailey, was found dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Sheriff Heath Jackson said during the investigation, White was identified as the suspected shooter and taken into custody and charged with murder.

Records note that the argument between White and Bailey centered around Bailey agreeing to pay White to house and train White's dog. The two apparently disagreed over the arrangement.

Court records state Bailey was shot multiple times after retreating to the doorway of a neighbor's home.

During a bond hearing Monday, White told District Judge Eric Coale that he was unemployed and requested a court-appointed attorney. Judge Coale granted his hardship application and appointed the public defender's office to represent him.

District Attorney Steve Billy said White was out on bond on a June, 2023 arrest for unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and requested no bond.

Judge Coale issued his no bond ruling and set an Aniya's Law and preliminary hearing for 2 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday). Billy also said he would file a motion to revoke his bond. White was also back before Judge Coale Tuesday on a failure to appear warrant issues out of circuit court.
