Williams indicted for murder

His gun tied to shooting of state trooper is also gun used in earlier shooting in Albany, Ga.

The backseat passenger in the vehicle that resulted in an Alabama state trooper shot and the female driver dead has been indicted by an Escambia County (Ala.) grand jury on felony murder and attempted murder.

Johndarous Christon Williams, 21, of Georgia remains in the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton with no bond following the grand jury indictment.

Williams was in the back seat of a vehicle driven by Angel Thornton of Albany, Ga., who was shot and killed by State Trooper Jeremy Alford after she opened fire on Alford April 9.

Trooper Alford attempted to make a traffic stop April 8 on I-65 in Conecuh County and the vehicle driven by Thornton fled. Thornton took the Brewton-Repton exit onto Highway 41 heading toward Brewton but left the roadway and hit a fire hydrant. Reports note that when Trooper Alford approached the vehicle, Thornton began shooting at the trooper with a handgun. Trooper Alford returned fire and Thornton was killed.

Trooper Alford was shot at least two times in the exchange of gunfire and has since been released from the hospital.

District Attorney Steve Billy presented the case to a grand jury last week. The grand jury cleared Trooper Alford of any charges of using excessive force but indicted Williams for murder in the death of Thornton and attempted murder on Trooper Alford.

Billy said evidence showed that Trooper Alford had been shot before he returned fire into the vehicle that killed Thornton. Williams, and the front seat passenger, Jana Arnold, 32, of Georgia were injured.

Billy said evidence determined that the gun Thornton used to shoot Trooper Alford was owned by Williams and forensics determined it was same the gun used when Williams was accused of shooting someone in Albany, Ga., earlier in April. At the time of the April 9 incident in Escambia County, Georgia officials had warrants out for Williams' arrest on charges of aggravated assault and firearm charges.

Following the April 9 incident involving Trooper Alford, Williams was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Billy did note no charges have been filed against Jana Arnold in relation to the shooting incident.
