Places second in state track meet; brings home gold in two events

Flomaton High School's boys track team finished second in the Class 1A through 3A state track meet this past weekend in Cullman in a meet that not only came down to inches or seconds but numbers of members on the team.

Madison Academy won the 2003 state title with Flomaton having 55 points and Madison having 58.

FHS track coach Karl Smith, who started the Hurricanes' track team in 2019 said the state meet finish was a first for Flomaton.

Jaxson Fillmore finished first in the 300 meter hurdles and Quinton Odom finished first in the triple jump to bring home the individual championships for Flomaton.

"Words can't express how proud I am of these guys," Smith said. "We were competing against a private school with 14 to 20 kids compared to our six."

Madison Academy secured the top spot in the final event Saturday in the 4x400 relay, which Flomaton did not have a team in that event.

Coach Smith noted that with no track facilities in Flomaton, his team practices on the football field and the parking lot.

"Sprinters use the football field and long distance runners use the parking lot," he said.

He added that he uses the football to practice relay teams basically focusing on mechanics and passing the baton.

"More and more history is being made with this program," Coach Smith said. "Nothing surprises me with them. We were so close to a state championship, it just blew me away."

In addition to Fillmore's first place finish in the 300 meter immediate hurdles, he placed fifth in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meter dash. Odom also finished second in the long jump.

Fillmore joined Quentin Lane, Deontay Averette and Ryder Spence to finish third in the 4x100 meter relay. Lane also finished second with a personal best in the 110 meter high hurdles.

Averette finished 17th in the 100 meter dash, Myles Adams finished sixth in the shot put and Ti'Shaun Baldwin finished 20th in the state in the 400 meter dash.
