Century man shot and killed

Johnson shot in Frisco City while his mother, aunt and others are still seeking answers

The mother of a Century man who was shot to death last Thursday in Frisco City is seeking answers and says Frisco City nor Monroe County law enforcement officials have reached out to her and that she has yet to see her son's body.

Cynthia Franklin said she had to reach out to the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office to verify that her son Lavor Chante Johnson, 43, had been shot to death.

The shooting last Thursday left on man dead and another seriously wounded as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

"Nobody has contacted me," Franklin said concerning her son's death. "My son didn't do anything to anybody. Everybody loved Lavor."

"They didn't even notify her to identify the body," said Franklin's sister, Lisa Johnson.

Franklin and Johnson said they began receiving telephone calls from people who knew her son to inform them that he was dead.

"She has not seen him," Lisa Johnson said of her sister. "She doesn't know if it's him or not. How can you know unless you put your eyes on him."

According to Frisco City Assistant Police Chief Daryl Knowles, who is spearheading the investigation for the Frisco City Police Department, officers responded to a report of shots fired last Thursday around 2 p.m. at a location on Harvestview Drive, which is off the Excel-Frisco Highway. When officers arrived, they found two men with gunshot wounds. One was dead and the other was severely wounded, Knowles said.

Excel police, Monroe County Sheriff's deputies and investigators with the District Attorney's Office also responded to the incident, which remains under investigation.

The man who survived the shooting was transported by ASAP Ambulance to the Monroe County Airport, where he was placed on a LifeFlight helicopter and flown to a large regional hospital for treatment. He remained in the hospital on Tuesday morning, but his condition was unavailable at press time. Police declined to release the name of the hospital out of fear of reprisals against the victim.

Knowles noted that two handguns were recovered at the scene of the shooting. It's unclear what led up to the shooting, but the incident remains under investigation, Knowles said.
