Flomaton man killed in crash

Maulden trapped inside burning vehicle

A Flomaton man died and a Flomaton woman was airlifted from the scene of a fiery crash early Friday morning on Old Atmore Road near the intersection of Tulip Road.

Jacob Maulden, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene after being trapped inside the burning vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, Emily Taylor, 21, was flown by helicopter to Sacred Heart Hospital and later released.

Flomaton Police Chief Chance Thompson said dispatchers received a call at 1:27 a.m. on May 13 of a single-vehicle crash on Old Atmore Road, which is located within the police department's jurisdiction.

Flomaton police, along with Flomaton and Friendship fire departments, state troopers and D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital ambulance responded.

Thompson said the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Taylor left the roadway, collided with trees and then caught on fire.

Taylor was able to exit the vehicle, but Maulden was trapped inside the burning vehicle.

Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton said the vehicle was fully involved with flames when firemen arrived and had to cut the roof off the vehicle to retrieve Maulden's body.

Thompson said the Flomaton Police Department and state troopers are investigating the crash and once all available evidence is obtained, it will be turned over the Escambia County district attorney's office for review. He noted no charges have been filed at this time and no other information would be released due to it being an active investigation.
