FHS donates 102 smoke detectors for residents

Fire department to give out detectors; will install at homes if asked

A program started under former Flomaton High School Principal Scott Hammond continues under current Principal George Brown where the school purchases smoke detectors and donates them to the Flomaton Volunteer Fire Department, which in turns gives them away to residents living within the Flomaton fire district.

Wednesday morning, Brown gave 102 smoke detectors to Fire Chief Steve Stanton and Fireman Jeremy Lee, the town's lone paid fireman.

Stanton said the program began eight years ago and has been continued under Brown.

Brown said Bondurant Lumber and Hardware gives the school "a good deal" on the smoke detectors that are donated to the fire department.

"It's a good way to give back to the community," Brown said. "The people in this community do so much for our schools and the fire department does so much for the schools."

Anyone needing a smoke detector can call Lee at 251-296-3439 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lee said people can come by the fire station and pickup the smoke detectors or Lee can come to their home and get it installed.

"We all know smoke detectors save lives," Stanton said. "We want to make sure every home is equipped with a working smoke detector."

Lee and Stanton said the timing of the recent smoke detectors were perfect with Lee saying he only had one left from last year's donation.
