Flomaton OKs limits on burning

No burning from 7 a.m to 7 p.m.

Following complaints about the burning of yard debris, the Flomaton Town Council voted Monday afternoon to ban burning from 7 p.m to 7 a.m. within the town limits.

The council had discussed having people get a permit to burn vegetation, limbs and woods, but opted not to include it in the ordinance.

An exception to the new ordinance will allow for an open fire for cooking and recreational purposes as long as the fire is started, maintained and kept in a steel, metal or masonry container, such as a barbecue grill, fire pit or outdoor fireplace.

Lease agreement

The town council also agreed to lease the concession stand at Hurricane Park to Flomaton Diamond Club during the spring and summer months for a fee of $1.

Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye said the town typically leases the concession stand to the organization running the summer baseball and softball programs.

Tim Rainer and Mike Wedgeworth told the council that they want to lease the concession stand to raise money to help offset the cost of parents whose children participate in summer ball programs.

Rainer said it normally cost about $4,000 a season to pay umpires.

Wedgeworth said the goal is to give the money back to the kids to help keep registration fees low.

The Flomaton Youth Baseball and Softball Association will have open registration for T-ball, softball and baseball from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25, Jan. 27 and Feb. 1 at Hurricane Park. The registration fee is $40 and only cash will be accepted. Players must also furnish a certified birth certificate.
