Fees going up on past due property taxes

Payments still accepted to prevent tax sale

As of Tuesday morning, Escambia County (Ala.) Tax Collector Tim Pettis said his office had collected about $16.6 million of the $18.1 million in property taxes that were due Jan. 3, but he expects some more to come in through the mail that was postmarked by Jan. 3.

Pettis said the percentage of taxes collected before the deadline was a little higher than last year and said the on-time payments should top $17 million once all the mail arrives.

Property owners who did not pay their taxes by Jan. 3 now face a 2 percent penalty plus a $5 fee. After Feb. 28, the penalty will increase to 4 percent and a $10 fee.

In April Pettis said he will begin the process of developing the list of properties which will be sold during the tax lien sale, scheduled for May 17.
