E.B. Piggly Wiggly is now open

Store rebounds from the flood

After being closed since Oct. 8, the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in East Brewton reopened its doors Monday afternoon with limited items but should be fully stocked by Friday or Monday as new items are trucked in daily.

The East Brewton store had about 2 to 3 feet of water inside the building following the heavy rains and flooding on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and was forced to close.

Store Manager Cyndi Lundy said the store received a small shipment of items Monday and a larger shipment arrived about 5 a.m. Wednesday that included meat and produce. Employees were on hand Wednesday to begin stocking shelves.

“We are shooting for Friday to be fully stocked but that may be pushing it,” Lundy said. “It may be Monday, but we are getting shipments everyday.”

Lundy said she also expects the deli to be open today (Thursday) with breakfast beginning at 6 a.m.

Once the water receded, Lundy said the store's 35 employees worked every day to haul off damaged groceries and clean the building.

“We worked in shifts with a morning shift, afternoon shift and a night shift,” she said. “They did a great job.”

She said even though the store had limited supplies, it was opened Monday afternoon, noting people were calling every day wanting to know when the store was open.

“We were working as quick as we could to reopen but we needed to make sure everything was clean and safe,” Lundy said. “We are now ready to get back to normal.”
