Flomaton council ratifies paving plan

Money saved while contractors in the town

The Flomaton Town Council gave its stamp of approval on a deal inked by Mayor Dewey Bondurant, Jr., to pave west of Railroad and College streets at a savings to the town.

Bondurant said Escambia County Engineer Bill Bridges called him about two weeks ago to say the county was going to pave Old Atmore Road all the way to Highway 31. He also said the railroad would also be doing paving.

Bondurant said Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye had already received a bid of $28,500 for the paving west of railroad and college streets. However, with contractors already in the area paving, the project could be done for $16,962 and town would be able to make two payments to cover the cost.

Town Clerk Carrie Moore said the money would come out of the gasoline tax fund.

The council voted unanimously to ratify the mayor's decision.

Public nuisance

The town council also voted Monday night on an ordinance to amend the town's nuisance ordinance, which Mayor Bondurant said would “add some teeth” to the town's existing ordinance.

Town Attorney Chuck Johns said it sets out penalties for first offense, second offense, etc., and clears up the penalties.

It also allows a police officer to enter private property and provides for construction provisions.

Johns said in the past complaints had to come to the mayor and then the council before action could be taken. Johns said the new ordinance will allow citations to be issued without the council taking action.

“It's going to help us clean up our town,” Bondurant said.

Johns said the goal is to get property owners to fix the problems but said this ordinance will provide them more incentive to do so.”

Tax collection

The council also passed a resolution that will allow RDS to collect the town's gasoline taxes. RDS currently collects business licenses and sales taxes for the town.

In other business, the council:

Zoning

- Mayor Bondurant announced that the zoning committee will meet at 4 p.m. at town hall on Sept. 29, Oct. 27 and Nov. 17 and would like the council to vote on the ordinance at its Dec. 13 meeting.

He noted the zoning committee meetings are open to the public.

- Approved Flomaton Elementary School Principal Courtney McBride to the library board.

- Was informed by Moore that she has set up an automated telephone call to let people know their utility bills are due to help avoid cutoffs.

She told the council the first calls went very well but she wants to do them three days earlier this month.

“We're trying to get the bills out before the first of the month,” Moore said.

She also said she thinks the people appreciate the reminder.
