Jay to kick off with fireworks Saturday

Windcreek Sunday, East Brewton Monday

Jay will kick off the Fourth of July weekend celebration this Saturday (July 3), Windcreek will follow on Sunday, July 4, and East Brewton will wrap things up Monday (July 5) with its annual duck race and fireworks at dark.

Jay will open the weekend Saturday with a 5-K run/walk beginning at 8 a.m. at Bray-Hendricks Park that will also include a 1 mile fun run. The early registration entry fee of $20 ends Friday, July 1. Registration will be $25 on the day of the race. Packets can be picked up at the park beginning at 6:30 a.m.

The Jay Elementary School Jr. Beta Club will be holding a fundraiser Saturday at the park to raise money for the club's trip to Washington, D.C.

Events begin at 5 p.m. with vendors, a bounce house, glow items, face painting, boiled peanuts, drinks and cotton candy with cash only.

Fireworks are scheduled for 9 p.m. at the park.

East Brewton

Due to the recent tornado that slammed East Brewton, Mayor Terry Clark said the city will have a scaled-down version of the Fourth of July on Monday, July 5, with all proceeds going to help tornado victims. The annual spades tournament and bingo have been cancelled.

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with the duck race on Murder Creek. Ducks are $5 each and can be purchased at city hall through Friday. The owner of the first duck to cross the finish line wins $200. Second place is $100 and third place is $50.

Mayor Clark said expenses associated with the fireworks and entertainment have already been paid and any money raised Monday will to to help tornado victims.

"All the proceeds will go to the tornado victims," Clark said. "We want to help the people who lost everything."

Sponsored by the Fort Crawford Commission, festivities will kick off after the duck race, at 6:20 p.m. with entertainment and concessions that will include hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks.

Melinda Miller will hit the stage from 6:20 to 6:40, followed by Lois Crenshaw. Wanda Green and Yvonne Lisenby will be on stage from 7 p.m.to 7:20 p.m., followed by Melissa Owens, Tonya Graves and end with the High Horse Band from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The fireworks show is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.

Windcreek

Windcreek Hotel and Casino will hold its annual fireworks show at 9 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the hotel.

Seating will be available at the amphitheater or they can be watched from the parking lot.
