Budgeted items approved by council don't have to wait on council approval at meetings
The Flomaton Town Council approved a recommendation by Town Clerk Carrie Moore to pay bills prior to the council's approval on budgeted items that had been previously approved by the council.
In the past, the council has waited until after its council meeting, held on the second Monday of each month, to get approval to pay the bills.
Moore told the council that the delay between when the council meets and when payments are due causes the town to receive late fees and cutoff notices. June's meeting was held on the 15th and many of the bills were already past due because of waiting on council approval.
Her request was to allow her to pay the bills on time for items that have already been approved in the budget.
“We don't want these small fees to add up,” she said.
She also said nothing will be paid without the council's approval, noting if there is a bill for a non-budgeted item it will be held until the council can approve the invoice.
“I will certainly agree we need to pay bills when they are due,” said Councilman Roger Adkinson.
“If power bills are not paid on time we get late fees,” Moore said.
She also told the council she will include a list of all the bills she has paid in the packets the council members receive prior to the council meeting.
The council voted unanimously to allow the bills on budgeted amounts to be paid on time, prior to the council meeting.
