Century hopes to return to city hall

Community center used due to COVID-19

The town of Century is eying a July 1 return to town hall to hold council meetings which will also help free up the community center on Highway 4 to be rented for other functions.

Due to COVID-19, the town has been conducting its council meetings, workshops and other meetings at the community center, which allows for better social distancing.

Mayor Ben Boutwell told the council Monday night that he expects everything to be back at full capacity on July 1.

Council President Louis Gomez said the council needs to take a look at its rental agreements and also get with the fire department to determine the maximum capacity at the community center.

The council agreed to address the move back to town hall and the rental agreements at its next meeting, scheduled for Monday, June 21, at the community center. The council will also finalize the dates for its upcoming budget hearings.

Until then all meetings will be held at the community center. The Century Charter Review Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the community center. A schedule has been set to hold the Charter Review Committee meetings on July 15, Aug. 19 and Sept. 23 at the community center. All meetings will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Due to COVID-19 those meetings can be accessed through the telephone by calling 888-475-4499, then entering 570 703 5793# and # again when prompted. Residents can also join the meetings via zoom at http://www.zoom.us/j/5707035793.

Lighting

Century resident Robert L. Mitchell addressed the council Monday voicing concerns over the lack of street lighting at certain areas of the town.

Michell said there are lights down on the ground and no lights on some poles. He pointed out that the intersection of Highway 29 and Pond Street has no lighting.

Mayor Ben Boutwell said he has been working with Gulf Power to replace all street lights in Century with LED bulbs which will save the town money. He also said the switch to LED would be done at no cost to the town.
