Couple gets out of their burning car

Fire spreads toward wood line

Around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 28, Flomaton Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a vehicle fire on Highway 31.

When firetrucks arrived on scene, the vehicle was fully involved and the fire was working its way toward the tree line, threatening to burn the woods, according to Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton.

Lee and Jessica Watson, of Atmore, were traveling south on Highway 31 when the 2002 Honda Civic began smoking.

"We were driving down the road and my husband pulled over quickly and said to get out, that the car was on fire," said Jessica Watson. "I couldn't get my seatbelt off and the door open. It seemed like it took forever to get out. I was really shaken."

Firefighters from Flomaton, Century, Friendship and Wawbeek Fire Departments worked to extinguish the flames in both the vehicle and the grass leading to the woodline.

There were no injuries to the driver or passenger and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
