Brewton, E.B., county support Earth Day

The cities of Brewton and East Brewton, along with the Escambia County Commission are sponsoring events around today's official Earth Day with clean-up opportunities that include providing trash bags for citizens or groups to pick up litter along county rights-of-way.

The county commission is providing trash bags for individuals, groups and clubs to pick up trash along the road. Full bags can be left along the road and will be picked up. Commissioners said anyone needing bags can call them and also let them know where you will be picking up so they can arrange for the bags to be picked up.

Brewton and East Brewton will be hosting a community wide Earth Day clean up this Saturday, April 21, for residents to dispose of unwanted items.

In East Brewton, the city will have its trash truck available for city residents to put trash curb side for pick up this Saturday. East Brewton residents need to call 867-7998 to arrange a pick up. No household garbage or tires will be accepted.

The landfill on Jay Road will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday with free dump fees.

The city of Brewton will have dumpsters at the old Walmart shopping center behind Farmer's Home Furnishings, at the New Beginnings parking lot, the J.L. Fisher Community Center, the corner of East Jackson and Sowell Road and behind Arby's at the entrance to the E.O. Wilson Park.

No household garbage, tires or electronics can be disposed of at the dumpster sites.

Disposal is limited to Brewton residents and no commercial trash in accepted.

Old automobile batteries can be dropped off at Auto Zone and O'Reilly Auto Parts and tires can be disposed of at the Brewton city shop on St. Nicholas Ave., next to the fire station.

Brewton residents can also take appliances to the Jay Road Landfill from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and electronics can be disposed of at the dumpster at the city shop next to the fire station.

The event was organized by the Brewton City Council's Earth Day Committee and the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce.
