Atmore man now faces drug charge

Meth found after Day arrested on warrant

An Atmore man who was arrested Saturday for an outstanding warrant in Alabama now faces a felony drug possession in Florida, after a deputy discovered methamphetamine inside his patrol vehicle.

Bruce Edward Day, 53, of Atmore, was at a gas station in Atmore when an Escambia County (Fla.) law enforcement officer recognized Day and knew he had an outstanding warrant for possession of a weapon in Alabama, according to an Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office report.

Day left the gas station in his Ford F-150 and was pulled over in the parking lot of the Grey Goose Liquor Store, where he was placed in custody. Before the deputy placed Day in the back of his patrol car, he asked if Day had anything on him that would get him in trouble or would cut or stick the deputy, and Day stated no.

The deputy checked his patrol car prior to Day's being placed in the rear seat. The report said upon arrival at the jail and after placing Day in the custody of the jail, the deputy checked the backseat area of the Tahoe where he observed a plastic baggie containing a white crystal like substance which field tested for methamphetamine pushed up behind the edge of the roll bar frame which separates the front and rear seating area.

The entire incident was captured on the deputy's in-car camera system. The video showed Day moving around with his legs and feet appearing to be trying to hide something in the floor area. Day was also looking down in the exact area of where he hid the meth, the report noted.

Day was arrested while still at the jail and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and given a bond of $2,500.
