Yard sale to benefit students

Scholarship in honor of Kelsey Padgett

This Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30 and 31, there will be a community-wide yard sale event at Legacy Acres in Brewton from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will benefit the Kelsey Padgett Scholarship Spirit of Flomaton High School. Legacy Acres is located at 327 East Pineview Circle In Brewton.

The $500 scholarship is awarded in memory of Kelsie Padgett by the Flomaton varsity cheerleaders. Padgett, a member of the FHS Class of 2020, died from a rare form of brain cancer.

"This is the first time we've done a yard sale," said Swan Chavers, a former teacher and personal friend of Kelsey and her parents. "I love to help the school do anything. We are all just trying to help out."

Chavers said she and FHS teacher Julie Newton and others who know the Padgetts had originally talked about having the event in the spring, but the pandemic made them postpone it. She said they talked about it in July and made the decision that if they were going to donate money, they would have to do something soon.

Chavers said she came up with the idea of a community-wide yard sale.

"We've got to help everybody," said Chavers. "We're hoping some of the people who have been afraid to get out because of the pandemic will get out and enjoy some fresh air."

Residents who have items they would like to sell can contact Chavers at 251-236-0756 to reserve a booth for $25, which will go toward the scholarship.

Chavers said there are pageant dresses, clothes, shoes, home items, Scentsy, Mary Kay, and many more items that will be for sale. There will be soft drinks and chips sold at the event.

Any type of yard sale items, goods, handmade goods are welcomed to sell.

"Kelsie was a fighter," said Newton. "She displayed strength and courage, all while maintaining her dedication and spirit to Flomaton High School. Today we'd like to honor her memory by awarding a deserving senior boy or girl who has displayed exceptional leadership, school spirit, and a dedication to extracurricular activities, clubs, and organizations at Flomaton High School."

The recipient of the scholarship is selected by the faculty and administration of FHS, according to Newton.
