Atmore man jailed for murder

A 23-year old Atmore man is being held on $1 million bond after being charged with the murder of an unidentified woman whose body was found was found Sept. 3 in a wooded area in the Nokomis area.

De'Antate Deshay Knight, 1885 James Road, was booked into the Escambia County Detention Center on one count of murder. District Judge Eric Coale set Knight's bond at $1 million and the district attorney's office also filed a motion to have Knight's probation on a previous charge revoked.

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said the body of the female was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy and to determine a positive identification.

Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said his department issued a missing person report on a female the day before the body was discovered but said until a positive identification is determined he doesn't know if it's the same person.

Sheriff Jackson said investigators with the sheriff's office and the Atmore Police Department responded to the Nokomis area Sept. 3 in reference to a possible homicide. He said investigators conducted interviews and executed numerous search warrants throughout the night.

After an extensive search of numerous wooded areas, the unidentified human corpse was located in the brush.

Jackson said investigators, along with crime scene technicians, processed the scene and later charged Knight with murder.

Jackson also noted it is an ongoing investigation and is asking anyone with information to contact the sheriff's office at 251-809-0741 or their nearest law enforcement agency.

Jackson also thanked Klass Kids for assisting the sheriff's office and Atmore police with their K-9 search teams.
