FHS coach indicted, arrested

Campbell facing nine felony charges stemming from money questions at W.S. Neal

Flomaton High School's new head baseball coach Coy Campbell, Jr., has been indicted and arrested on nine felony counts, stemming from allegations he stole money and forged receipts while employed at W.S. Neal High School.

Escambia County School Superintendent John Knott had no comment on Campbell's status as a teacher and coach in Flomaton saying with an on-going investigation, he could not comment.

Campbell, 50, 9046 Munson Highway, Milton, Fla., turned himself in Tuesday at the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton and was released on $25,000 bond.

An Escambia County grand jury indicted Campbell on seven counts of forgery, one count of theft of property III and using his position for personal gain.

The forgery charges are Class C felonies, the theft of property is a Class D felony and the use of his position for personal gain is a Class B felony and ethics violation that carries a prison sentence of two to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson said his office began an investigation into misappropriation of funds at W.S. Neal High School and the investigation led to discrepancies on money and receipts that led to Campbell's indictment.

In the nine-count indictment, counts one through five allege forged receipts from the "baseball gate cash account documents and/or baseball tickets report, with knowledge that it was forged."

Counts six and seven claims Campbell created receipts and invoices for baseballs or equipment while at W.S. Neal with knowledge that the receipts were forged.

Count eight states Campbell used unauthorized control or otherwise convert to his personal use, money that was the property of W.S. Neal High School, which constitutes an ethics violation.

Count nine, theft of property, states Campbell deprived W.S. Neal High School of more than $500 and not exceeding $1,499.

In April, the Escambia County School Board approved the transfer of Campbell from W.S. Neal High School to Flomaton High School as a driver's education and physical education instructor. He was also named as Flomaton's head baseball coach.

In addition to his job as head baseball coach at W.S. Neal High School, Campbell also served as the school's assistant principal.
