Armistead Jake Holmes, Jr.

Armistead Jake Holmes, Jr., 91, of Brewton, died Monday, July 6, 2020.

Mr. Holmes was born Jan. 9, 1929, to Armistead Jake and Ella Frances Hoomes, in the Hoomesville community and became a lifetime resident of Escambia County, Ala. A member of the Brewton Church of Christ, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and elder, he graduated from Damascus High School in 1947 and began working at T.R. Miller Mill Company in the forestry division. He held several positions and graduated from the University of West Florida throughout his long career and retired as a vice president. Performing extensive genealogy and research into the Hoomes and Holmes family, he served as a church missionary, visiting Inta, Russia, Lethem and making multiple trips to Morakabie, Guyana.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 9, at the Brewton Church of Christ with Min. Richard Rogers and Min. Steve Lambert officiating. Burial followed at Hoomesville Church of Christ Cemetery with Craver's Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Holmes is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judith Wilson Holmes of Brewton; two sons, Philip (Stefania) Holmes of Milton, Fla. and Jeff (Donna) Holmes of Brewton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Holmes is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Milford Hoomes; three sisters, Ethel Hoomes, Christine Baggett and Mary Margorie Lambert.
