Jay holds town council meeting

The Jay Town Council discussed the Bray-Hendricks Park master plan and other projects going on in the town at its Monday May 18 meeting.

The town needs help constructing and installing the town's new playground equipment and is seeking volunteers to for Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 to install the new equipment.

There is now a concrete border around the playground and the prep work needs to be done, he said.

There will be a supervisor at the park for volunteer days, according to Seib, but that it is up to the town to finish with installing the new equipment.

“We need volunteers with construction knowledge,” said Jay Operations Manager, Eric Seib. “We saved $20,000 by constructing and installing the equipment ourselves. Please help us create a better playing environment for our kids.”

Volunteers will meet at Bray Hendricks Park, located at 5259 Booker Lane, at 7:30 a.m. both days. The flyer is on the Town of Jay's Facebook page.

Water line update

Seib told the council the CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) Project has been tied in along Williams Street, Spring Street, State Street and Highway 4. He said the streets left are McCurdy and along Calfee Street, which they are working on currently.

Seib said there were some adjustments in the water they had to make to get the water back to working when the new lines were put in. Seib said he is being diligent about making sure the company doing the work cleans up and doesn't leave the dirt bare when they finish putting in the water lines.

“I want grass or sod back on the road sides,” said Seib. “We just want to make sure they are not left messy.”

Lawnmower purchase

The town is looking at the purchase of a new zero-turn lawn mower and there was discussion of whether a gas motor is a better investment than a diesel lawn mower.

It was mentioned that the diesel engine costs less, but there was some question whether Tony, the town's main landscape person, could work on a diesel.

Jay Mayor Shon Owens said in his opinion, a diesel is better for longevity. He thought it would be better as a long-term investment, especially since there is a $4,000 difference in price.

Councilwoman Maxine Ivey said she thought a diesel lasts longer.

The council voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a gas mower.

“Whatever we decide on, I would like to see it bought from Smith Tractor,” said Owens.

The town did purchase a John Deere zero turn gas mower from Smith's Tractor in Jay for $9,174, which is on order currently.

The next regular in-person council meeting will be at 6 p.m., Monday June 1, at Jay Town Hall.
