Royce Rodgers Layton

Royce Rodgers Layton, 85, of Brewton, died Tuesday, April 21, 2020, in a Pensacola hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Layton was born Nov. 8, 1934, to Royce Fayette and Fannie Rodgers Layton, in Brantley, Ala.

A former resident of Montgomery, he was a long-time resident of Brewton. A graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran and member of the Brewton First United Methodist Church. He retired from AT&T with 30 years of service, with his final project involving fiber optic service to the Brewton area. He started Brewton Air Conditioning in 1975 in conjunction with electrical contracting with his four sons and became involved heavily with Brewton Youth Football and the Boy Scouts of America. In retirement, he became involved in the L-Pond Hunting and Fishing Club Community in Castleberry, where he was a long-time member.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 24, at Union Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Edwards officiating. Burial followed with Williams Memorial Chapel directing.

Mr. Layton is survived by his wife of 64 years, Robbie Joyce Akers Layton of Brewton; four sons, Steven (Vivian) Layton, Mike (Sherry) Layton and Kenny (Angie) Layton, all of Brewton, and Andy (Karen) Layton of Milton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Layton was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sarah Holland and Frances Erickson; and one grandchild.
