Tax collector moves back tax sale

Escambia County (Ala.) to hold delinquent property tax sale July 2

Escambia County (Ala.) Tax Collector Tim Pettis announced that the county's delinquent tax property sale has been postponed until July 2 to give taxpayers additional time to pay their bills before additional penalties are added to the total.

The sale of properties where the property taxes have not been paid is normally held in May in front of the courthouse. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alabama Department of Finance Office of the State Comptroller has extended the county's final settlement date to Aug. 31.

Property taxes in Alabama were due in October and became delinquent on Jan. 1. Pettis also noted additional penalties will be added for any taxes not paid by May 21.

“In fairness, with the closure of the courthouse this gives the people a little additional time to pay their taxes,” Pettis said. “Based on the circumstances we are under I felt this was the fair approach.”

Pettis also noted the July 2 sale date is tentative on whether or not the state makes any other changes.

As of Tuesday, Pettis said there are about 1,000 parcels of land in the county where taxes have not been collected.

Pettis also said taxes must be paid by either certified funds or cash. Tax payments can be made to the tax collector's office at P.O. Box 407, Brewton, Ala., 36427. Due to the partial closure of the courthouse, people wishing to pay in cash can call Pettis at 251-867-0209 to set up an appointment to come to his office.
