Atmore police find decomposed body

Officers respond to burglary call and find body inside home; asking for information

The Atmore Police Department continues to investigate the discovery of a badly decomposing body officers found last Thursday, March 26, when officers responded to a burglary call at the residence.

In a release from Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks, at 10:22 p.m. last Thursday, police received a call of a burglary in progress at 71 Jones St.

According to Chief Brooks, when officers arrived they surrounded the residence and then observed the residence had been forcibly entered.

When officers entered the home and began doing a room-by-room search for suspects they discovered a badly decomposing body in one of the bedrooms. Brooks said officers believed it was the body of a female.

“With any unattended death, we are treating this as a homicide,” Brooks said.

He said the body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Mobile for a positive identification and cause of death.

He added that detectives in the department continue to investigate the death and ask anyone with any information about the case to contact the Atmore Police Department at 251-368-9141 or their nearest law enforcement agency.
