A Jay man who was a pas- senger in a car pulled over for an expired tag and arrested Dec. 29 for drug possession was arrested on Jan. 4 and faces a new drug possession charge following a traffic stop.

Anthony Harold Hopkins, 39, was a passenger in a white Toyota sedan traveling east- bound on Highway 90 near Avalon Boulevard in Milton when an officer observed the driver's failure to dim the high beams as he drove past, according to a Santa Rosa County Sheriff's office report.

The officer initiated a traf- fic stop and made contact with the driver, who provided her driver's license. The pas- senger, Hopkins, provided his Florida ID to the officer. The report said the officer noted that Hopkins kept looking down and was fidgeting with his hands, not really looking up when the officer asked questions.

As the officer waited for the car occupants' informa- tion to return through dis- patch, he walked up to the passenger door to speak with Hopkins, who had to open the door because the window was not able to be rolled down. The report said the officer observed a pill bottle in the door pocket. The officer asked Hopkins if the bottle was his and Hopkins handed it to the officer and said, “Here.”

The name on the pill bottle was Anthony Hopkins. The officer opened the bottle and

observed a small crystal, which is consistent with methamphetamine, the report said.

The officer asked Hopkins to step out of the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs. A search of the passenger area where Hopkins had been sit- ting located a small plastic zip lock bag with a small amount of crystal substance also in the door, according to the report.

The officer observed that the window control panel missing from the door. Inside the door the officer located a small zip lock bag containing methamphetamine weighing 4.8 grams. The officer also located a red and gray leather case containing a black digi- tal scale with crystal residue in the passenger seat where Hopkins was sitting the report noted.

Hopkins was arrested and charged with one count felony possession of a con- trolled substance. He was transported to Santa Rosa County Jail, where he was given a bond of $5,000.
