Longleaf expands, will add new jobs in area

Ribbon is cut on 8,000 square foot addition in Brewton

Longleaf Machining, LLC, located inside the Brewton Industrial Park, cut the ceremonial ribbon of its 8,000 square-foot addition Tuesday that includes a new piece of equipment that owner and president Thomas E. McMillan said will bring cutting-edge technology and more jobs to the business.

"I've always wanted to make things," McMillan told the crowd gathered inside the new facility. "This machine will build something you don't find anywhere. This sets us apart."

Technically, the new machine is a 2014 Okuma VTM-2000YB 5 axis CNC.

"By adding this machine to its inventory of CNC equipment, Longleaf has greatly increased its machining capacities," McMillan stated. "Not only will the machine give us 5 axis capability, it can machine material up to 78 inches in diameter and 55 inches in length. It also has both mill and lathe capabilities."

McMillan stated the new building is in addition to the current Longleaf 28,675 square foot facility that houses multiple high-tech machines.

"This added capability sets us apart from most machine shops in our area," McMillan said. "We already have a reputation of producing quality parts. Now we can produce larger parts in less time with great precision."

McMillan said the Brewton company produces, and will continue to produce, parts for commercial airlines, trains and military operations.

Brewton Mayor Yank Lovelace was on hand for the ribbon cutting and thanked McMillan for what he is doing in Brewton and the jobs he's creating in the Brewton community.

The machine shop began operations in 2001 for a different division of the company's parent company. In the spring of 2008, the machine shop was spun-off from that company and Longleaf Machining was established.

Longleaf Machining employs some of the most experienced machine programmers and operators in the southeast.

The plant is located at 766 Industrial Park Drive in Brewton and can be reached by telephone at 251-867-8477, by fax at 251-867-8479 or at http://www.longleafmachinig.com
