Chase leads to arrest

A Century man who took law enforcement on a chase for more than 8 miles through the towns of Flomaton and Century September 1, 2019, now faces one count felony fleeing and eluding.

Isaac Levon Mitchell, 35, 7881 Alger Road, was driving west bound on Highway 4 in Century when a law enforcement officer who was parked at the sheriff's office in Century observed a white truck pass him with no lights on, according to a Santa Rosa Sheriff's office report.

The officer pursued the vehicle with his high beams on and saw it traveling in the east bound lane with no lights on. As he caught up with the truck, it ran off the road and jerked back onto the road, the report said.

The officer suspected the driver to be under the influence and initiated his lights and sirens on his marked patrol car in an attempt to stop the truck. The report said the officer feared the truck would hit other vehicles head on, as it swerved and continued in the wrong lane toward oncoming vehicles.

The report said the lights on the truck went off and came back on several times, as though the driver was attempting to hide from the patrol car in pursuit. The driver of the truck, later identified as Mitchell, turned on a flashlight in the cab and began to shine it on himself and at the officer, blinding the officer for a moment. Mitchell shined the light all over the ground as he drove, according to the report.

As the pursuit continued to Flomaton, the truck went through the intersection of Highway 29 and College Street, approaching the Poplar Street intersection. The report said the truck ran through the Shell gas station parking lot, nearly missing bystanders in the parking lot. The pursuit continued on streets in Flomaton and back to Highway 29, where it turned left into the parking lot of Odom's Bar and package, then behind, where it continued and came out onto East Stateline Road, the report said.

Flomaton officer Lopez was able to cut the truck and force it to come to a stop.

Mitchell was arrested Nov. 19 in Milton and charged with one count felony fleeing and eluding with lights and sirens activated with disregard to the safety of others. Mitchell received no bond.
