Jay Royals lose to Baker

Playing in the region finals tournament for the first time in the school's history, the Jay High School varsity volleyball team lost 3-1 to Baker Tuesday, following a 15-game winning streak and a win against Chipley in the semi-regionals.

“Although we lost four seniors the year before, we came out this summer, working every day the month of July to August,” said Coach Carey Locklin. “We played in the pre-season tournament and were the champions, which got us fired up.”

She said the team came out with a 15-game winning streak, which got them more ready to win.

“We knew that Baker was going to be our big road block to get through to go to the playoffs,” she said.

Jay beat Baker at Jay in four sets and then Baker beat Jay in Baker with five sets during the season, then at districts, with five sets.

As district runner-ups, they played Chipley in the semi-regionals and won, which is what put them against Baker.

Locklin said she is losing one senior this year but is excited about the team next year.

“We're chipping away,” said Locklin. “We're going to take it point by point. We'll take care of it next year. The future's looking bright, for sure.”

Locklin said next year's season will start in August, but the team will start working earlier than that in the gym training.

“Volleyball is back on the map for Jay High School,” said Locklin.
