East Brewton man arrested after deputy finds meth, pot

An East Brewton man found asleep behind the wheel of his running pickup truck was arrested after an Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputy found methamphetamine and marijuana in his possession.

Melton Wayne Mitchell, Jr., 29, 104 Hart St., was arrested Sept. 24 and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (meth), unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to sheriff's office reports, Sgt. Claude Cosey was driving on Foshee Road when he observed a red 2017 Nissan Frontier with its headlights on parked off the side of the road with the left rear of the vehicle near the roadway. Cosey activated his emergency lights and approached the vehicle, noting the vehicle was running and the driver's window was down. Mitchell was found asleep behind the steering wheel and Cosey reported seeing a glass pipe with what appeared to be meth residue in Mitchell's lap.

Cosey reported he woke Mitchell up and asked him what the pipe was for and Mitchell told him it was for meth. He also asked Mitchell if there was any meth inside the vehicle and Mitchell said he wasn't sure but didn't think so.

While patting Mitchell down for officer safety, Cosey reported finding rolling papers in his back pocket and a small bag containing either marijuana or spice in his front pocket. Cosey removed a cellophane wrapper from a cigarette pack that contained two partially burned hand-rolled cigarettes and a whole hand-rolled cigarette. Mitchell told Cosey the substance was marijuana.

Cosey also reported finding a clear ziplock bag containing meth inside the vehicle.

Mitchell also told Cosey he seldom used meth but does it sometimes because he works long hours.

Mitchell was placed under arrest and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
