Intense training in high heat

Firefighters take advantage of realistic training at Flomaton Station

Firefighters from Flomaton, Century, Barnett Crossroads, Jay and Allentown were in Flomaton for three days this week participating in a training exercise utilizing a burn trailer provided by the Alabama Fire College.

The training exercises began Monday and were scheduled to continue until last night (Wednesday).

Flomaton Fire Chief Steve Stanton said the burn trailer comes to Flomaton, Brewton and Atmore at least once a year to help firemen train to enter burning homes and buildings.

"It's a very important training," Stanton said. "It's just like going into a burning home with the flames, the heat, the atmosphere and the unknowns that can change quickly."

"A lot of people don't understand the training firemen go through every year," Stanton said. "It's done to prepare them to make the right decisions when they do have to enter a burning home to save people."

Stanton said the fire college owns three of the $450,000 burn trailers and makes them available to fire departments all across the state of Alabama.

"It doesn't matter how long you've been a fireman, things change," he said. "The training is essential to not only protect the lives of the firemen, but the citizens as well."
