Drive safely, school is on

A few months ago we wrote a story about the new speed device purchased by the Flomaton Police Department that shows motorists what the speed limit is and how fast their vehicle was traveling. Police Chief Bryan Davis said the data collected showed the overwhelming majority of people were exceeding the speed limit.

School bells will ring today in most schools across the area. That not only means that the 2019-20 school year has started, it means a lot of children will be out and about crossing roads, streets and highways.

Police lower the speed limits during certain times of the day around schools, but the beginning of school is also the beginning of a lot of other activities that take place after the final bell of the day rings.

We're asking people to obey the speed limits. They are set for a reason. They are set because usually engineers determine what the appropriate speed limit should be on any given road based on the road and its surroundings.

We were all kids once and most of us darted out in a road or street when we shouldn't have. Even if it's not your fault, you will carry the guilt of running over a child for the rest of your life.

While speed limits should be observed throughout the year, it's especially important during the school year when so many young children are out and about.

Slow down; pay attention and by all means wait until you can stop before sending a text or responding to a text.

The TV show 'Hillstreet Blues' always began with the sergeant telling the policemen in the room “Be careful out there”. Remember that.

Also remember if you are carrying that precious cargo of young children, the police will pull you over if they are not constrained, and we've been told no warning tickets will be issued.
