George Newton Word, 93, of McDavid, died Monday, July 29, 2019.
Mr. Word was born in Wedowee, Ala. and had been a resident of McDavid most of his life. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he worked as an accountant with St. Regis Paper Company for 40 years. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, treasurer, and a Sunday School teacher.
The funeral was held at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 1, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Chip Barbs and Rev. Harold Brown officiating. Burial followed at Crary Memorial Cemetery with Craver's Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Word is survived by his wife, Elsie D. Word of McDavid; three sons, Jerry (Linda) Word, Don (Starr) Word and Jeff Word (Michelle Criswell), all of McDavid; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Word was preceded in death by four brothers, Harlis Word, Curtis Word, Russell Word and Oscar Word; and two sisters, Louise Brown and Evelyn Irvin.
