Stolen truck, drugs lead to arrest

A Brewton man was arrested July 27 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and dealing in stolen property after law enforcement discovered narcotics in the vehicle he occupied and a check on the tag of the vehicle reported it as stolen.

Clay Frederick Kast, 64, 407 Juniper Ridge Dr., was approached by law enforcement responding to a report of a red Ford F150 pickup truck backed into a wooded area with two occupants in Pensacola July 27, according to an Escambia County Sheriff's Office report.

A records check of the Alabama tag on the vehicle was conducted through dispatch and it showed the vehicle it was attached to as stolen out of East Brewton, Ala., the report said.

When the officer asked the driver, later identified as Kast, to step out of the vehicle, a small baggie containing methamphetamine fell from the driver's seat where Kast had been sitting, according to the report.

The officer asked Kast if he knew the vehicle was stolen and he stated “no”. The officer asked Kast how he obtained the vehicle and Kast told the officer he had bought the truck for $350, which Kast borrowed from his mother, the report said.

The officer then asked Kast if he believed $350 was a reasonable price for a working vehicle and Kast responded, “Yes, because it did need some work done to it.” The officer asked Kast if he had a bill of sale for the vehicle along with the registration and proof of insurance, which Kast was unable to provide, the report said.

When the officer asked the suspect who he had bought the vehicle from, Kast stated, “My cousin's boyfriend that I only know as Kyle,” the report said. Kast was unable to provide the cousin's name or the cousin's boyfriend's last name and also could not provide contact information in regards to speaking with his cousin or cousin's boyfriend, 'Kyle', according to the report.

A tow truck from Rusty's Auto Paint and Body arrived on scene and towed the vehicle to their lot as advised by the East Brewton Police Department.

Kast was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and dealing in stolen property and transported to Escambia County Jail, where he was given a total bond of $20,000.
