JAY HIGH SCHOOL BAND CAMP 2019

The 2019-2020 Jay High School marching band kicked off practice last week. With practices in the morning and afternoon five days a week, Troy State University graduate and Band Director Connie Wilkes said the band members are returning seventh through 12th graders.

“Of all the band members, 14 out of 48 are rookies, so I've got a lot who've been marching,” said Wilkes. “Their strength is a great attitude and great work ethic.”

The theme for this year is water, and the color is aqua. Wilkes said the songs they will be playing are 'At the River', then 'Wade in the Water' and finally, the 70's song, 'Smoke on the Water', with some jazz undertones added.

Competitions scheduled for this year include Troy University, a district music performance assessment at Tate High School and then to Brewton for the Dixieland Festival.

Wilkes said she is assisted by expert drill writer Randy Nelson and award-winning music arranger Carolyn Whidden, which makes a big difference in making sure Jay High School's show is unlike any other.

“When you have music and drill thats written specifically for your band, its just so much better,” said Wilkes. “It's like getting a dress off the rack versus getting a dress that's fitted specifically to you.”

Wilkes has help from several people, including assistant Rachel Belleville and instructors Christopher Mills and Rebecca Belleville and Joshua Dregas, who works with the drums.

“Drum Major Jenna Britt, guard captain and Madison Edwards work really well with the band,” said Wilkes. “Drum Captain Devin Sauls and Band Captain Emily Lauria round out a really helpful and knowledgeable group that will make this year's show unique. They'll be using swing flags, rifles and regular flags.”

She said as part of the show's theme, there will be a small wishing well set up and band members will make special use of small silver pales and water.

Wilkes said the school staff and administration provide great support for the band program and she is proud to be a part of the Jay High School spirit.

“I get a lot of support from my administration, which I adore, they are wonderful,” said Wilkes. “Principal Stephen Knowlton and Assistant Principal Wes Underwood really do help, they really go to bat for us.”

The Jay Royals’ first football game will be at 7 p.m., Friday, August 16, against Graceville at Jay High School.
